Let us help

Seeking help is nothing to be ashamed about. Everybody goes through challenges and seeking help is not something to be ashamed of.

Drawing from my extensive background in psychology and family therapy, I am well-equipped to offer assistance, support, and guidance.

Hello, my name is Ros Yuen, I am a psychologist and family therapist practicing at Kensington.

Welcome, I’m Ros Yuen, a psychologist focusing on family therapy, conveniently located near Magill.

I hope to support you to achieve realistic and meaningful changes in your life if that is your desire. My primary aim is to interrupt the existing patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving that maintain your distress and to introduce new skills so that you can move on in life effectively.

I have a deep interest in helping people heal from stress and trauma, to help them reduce anxiety, conquer depression and build life-giving relationships. It is urgent today to acquire the skills to create our own sense of contentment by seeking more control over our own thoughts and deeds and foregoing misguided attempts at controlling those things that are simply uncontrollable. In short, it is enough that we learn to surf the waves of the ocean without shifting the shoreline.

My services primarily take place in-office, offering face-to-face sessions, with the flexibility of telehealth consultations when necessary. For mental health emergencies, individuals will be promptly referred to the SA Mental Health Triage Services by calling 131465.

My Psychology Services

Nurturing a shift towards stronger, more enduring relationships alongside a mental health professional’s assistance may mark a significant turning point in your life journey.

Let’s embark on a journey to strengthen your relationship and enrich your life. Through tailored skills and strategies, I aim to empower you to navigate challenges effectively. My focus lies in fostering healthy couple and family dynamics, addressing your well-being.

The journey of intimate relationships often involves highs and lows, influencing multiple areas and presenting issues that may seem daunting to confront solo.

The fabric of family ties is comprised of diverse perspectives, objectives, behaviours, and interactions. These elements can give rise to intricate dynamics that pose challenges to the happiness and wellness of all involved.

Family transformations bring a mix of benefits and challenges. Blended families encounter specific obstacles demanding delicate and detailed support to overcome.

The early stages of a relationship with a narcissist might be exhilarating and joyful, but as their lack of authentic empathy becomes apparent, the dynamics can deteriorate rapidly, leading to challenging situations.

Various factors unique to same-sex couples need a comprehensive approach from a skilled professional who understands their specific needs.

Issues in the working environment, such as intimidation or harassment, can be extremely difficult to cope with due to the complex nature of the situation. Professional support may make a significant difference.

If your Private Health Insurance incorporates Psychology under Extras, there’s a possibility to claim rebates through your Health Fund. Given the varying policies and extents of coverage, it’s wise to consult your Health Fund directly to ascertain the applicable details.

Medicare offers rebates for individuals, not couples, under a Mental Health Plan which is to be written by your GP. A Mental Health Plan has a shelf life of 12 months and during that period, you are entitled to 10 sessions assigned by your GP as 6 sessions, initially, and another 4 sessions following a review consult.

To learn more about the rebates currently offered, visit this resource.

Your privacy is our priority, and confidentiality is upheld throughout our sessions. Psychologists are bound by professional standards and legal obligations to maintain confidentiality, with exceptions only in cases of court subpoenas or when there’s a genuine risk of harm to you or others, necessitating mandated reporting.

Psychologists are mandated reporters according to the Firearms Regulations 2017. This means we’re obligated to report any suspected firearm-related injuries or unsafe firearm situations.

Psychologists are required by law to report any reasonable suspicion of harm to a child or young person.

Additional details regarding privacy and your legal rights can be accessed here.

When you arrive, you’ll be asked to fill out an intake form in the waiting room. The first session is dedicated to exploring your concerns, with my gentle guidance to unearth any underlying issues. You’ll also have the chance to experience my interpersonal style and determine if it resonates with you. Typically, the intake process spans two sessions, and during the initial session, my primary focus is on being an empathetic listener, fully present to your needs.

We kindly ask for a minimum of 48 business hours notice for cancellations to accommodate those on our waiting list. In the event of cancellation less than 48 business hours before the appointment or non-attendance, full fees will be charged. For further details, please refer to our cancellation policy.

The Gottman Method

Adapting various approaches to address specific issues is crucial to meet the unique needs of individuals or couples. One effective technique I utilise is called the Gottman Method.

This approach to couples therapy sessions and marriage counselling focuses on three profiles of relationships: the friendship profile, the conflict profile, and the shared meanings profile.

Interventions are tailored to the specific strengths and weaknesses of a couple’s relationship in terms of these profiles. There is a particular focus on perpetual issues, solvable problems, and conflict resolution and communication.

Do you struggle with…?

Anger, though a common human emotion, can pose issues when handled destructively. Developing an understanding of your anger is pivotal to its control. Recognise triggers, heed warning signs, and adopt coping mechanisms to effectively manage them.

Continuous worry or intrusive thoughts that disrupt everyday functioning define ongoing anxiety. While experiencing occasional anxiety is natural, when it becomes prolonged or unmanageable, it surpasses regular responses to life’s challenges.

When your behaviour raises concerns among yourself or your loved ones and begins to detrimentally affect your life, pursuing personalised treatment can provide the support needed to address these challenges effectively.

Compulsions can have a profound impact on daily functioning, warranting attention.

People go through periods of feeling down, but being depressed you feel persistently sad. Persistent depression can become a disabling mental health condition.

Experiencing symptoms like reduced energy, diminished interest in once-enjoyed activities, or a tendency to withdraw may indicate the need for assistance with managing a depressive disorder.

Stress is commonly characterised by feelings of tension and worry, serving as a temporary response that can sometimes be beneficial, albeit uncomfortable. Nonetheless, when stress becomes detrimental and interferes with daily functioning, it necessitates specific strategies and coping mechanisms.

Instances of extreme fear or threat can leave psychological scars in their wake. Traumatic events wield significant power, often exhibiting themselves through a range of physical, behavioural, emotional, or cognitive signs and symptoms associated with trauma-related challenges.

Obsessive thinking is commonly accompanied by repetitive actions or rituals intended to alleviate the anxiety associated with those thoughts. Seeking support from qualified and experienced professionals is often the most effective approach to tackling this complex issue.

Challenges related to insecure attachment, dismissive-avoidant attachment, fearful-avoidant attachment, and anxious-preoccupied attachment typically call for extensive professional assistance.
