I may be able to support you

Asking for help is a courageous step. We all experience times of turbulence and disruption in our lives.

With years of experience in psychology and family relationship therapy, I can offer valuable assistance, support, and direction.

Hello, my name is Ros Yuen, I am a psychologist and family therapist practicing at Kensington.

Hello, my name is Ros Yuen, I am a psychologist and family therapist practicing near Magill.

My mission is to partner with you to facilitate realistic and significant changes in your life if that’s your objective. I aim to interrupt the persistent loops of thought, feeling, and action that perpetuate your distress, and to introduce tools to help you progress.

Helping individuals heal from stress and trauma, alleviating anxiety, overcoming depression, and nurturing fulfilling relationships are areas where my passion thrives. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s imperative to cultivate the ability to find inner peace by managing our thoughts and actions wisely, rather than trying to manipulate external circumstances beyond our control. Simply put, it’s about mastering the art of riding life’s waves without attempting to alter the ocean’s shore.

I primarily offer office-based consultations, supplemented by telehealth options as required. In cases of mental health emergencies, individuals will be directed to seek assistance from the SA Mental Health Triage Services by dialling 131465 without delay.

Psychological Assistance

Cultivating healthier, more resilient relationships with the guidance of a mental health worker could be transformative for your life.

I can work with you to help you develop skills and strategies that may improve various aspects of your relationship and assist you to live a more fulfilling life. My areas of interest include couple relationships and family relationships.

Intimate relationships will inevitably face ups and downs. This can impact many facets and cause a variety of issues that may be difficult to deal with alone.

The fabric of family ties is comprised of diverse perspectives, objectives, behaviours, and interactions. These elements can give rise to intricate dynamics that pose challenges to the happiness and wellness of all involved.

When families change and grow, it can be both a positive and difficult experience. Blended families may face unique challenges that require a careful and intricate approach.

Relationships with narcissists can initially seem thrilling and enjoyable, but as genuine care diminishes, they can swiftly turn sour, revealing their detrimental nature.

The complexities faced by same-sex couples call for a thorough approach from a compassionate professional who comprehends their experiences.

Issues in the working environment, such as intimidation or harassment, can be extremely difficult to cope with due to the complex nature of the situation. Professional support may make a significant difference.

If your Private Health Insurance includes Extras for Psychology, you might be entitled to claim a rebate from your Health Fund. Since coverage can differ based on policies and levels, it’s recommended to confirm the specifics directly with your Health Fund.

Medicare offers rebates for individuals, not couples, under a Mental Health Plan which is to be written by your GP. A Mental Health Plan has a shelf life of 12 months and during that period, you are entitled to 10 sessions assigned by your GP as 6 sessions, initially, and another 4 sessions following a review consult.

Explore further details regarding available rebates by clicking here.

Confidentiality is paramount in all our sessions. Psychologists are ethically and legally obligated to maintain confidentiality, except in specific situations such as a court subpoena or if there is a significant risk of harm to you or others, where mandated reporting is required.

As mandated reporters under the Firearms Regulations 2017, psychologists are legally required to report any suspected firearm injuries or unsafe firearm situations to the appropriate authorities.

Psychologists are required by law to report any reasonable suspicion of harm to a child or young person.

You can find more information on privacy and your legal rights here.

Upon arrival, you’ll be requested to fill out an intake form in the waiting room. During the first session, you’ll have the opportunity to discuss your concerns while I offer gentle guidance to help discuss any issues. You’ll also have a chance to assess my interpersonal style and determine if it aligns with your preferences. Typically, the intake process spans two sessions, and in the initial session, my goal is to provide attentive listening and support.

To ensure fair scheduling, we request at least 48 business hours notice for cancellations, allowing us to offer the appointment slot to others on our waiting list. If cancellations occur less than 48 business hours before the appointment or in the case of non-attendance, full fees will apply. For additional information, please review our cancellation policy.

The Gottman Approach

Taking different approaches when working to improve certain issues is important to cater for the specific needs of an individual or couple. One such technique that I implement is known as the Gottman Method.

In couples therapy and marriage counselling, this approach emphasises three relationship profiles: the friendship profile, the conflict profile, and the shared meanings profile.

Interventions are tailored to the specific strengths and weaknesses of a couple’s relationship in terms of these profiles. There is a particular focus on perpetual issues, solvable problems, and conflict resolution and communication.

Do you struggle with…?

While anger is inherent to human nature, its expression in harmful ways can lead to problems. Mastering your anger begins with comprehension. Identify triggers, acknowledge warning signs, and embrace coping mechanisms to effectively navigate this emotion.

Enduring distressing thoughts or excessive worry that hinders daily activities is indicative of ongoing anxiety. Although feeling anxious from time to time is common, when it persists or becomes unmanageable, it deviates from typical reactions to circumstances.

If your behaviour is causing distress for you or your loved ones and is interfering with your life, seeking specialised treatment tailored to your specific requirements can offer valuable assistance in addressing these concerns.

People go through periods of feeling down, but being depressed you feel persistently sad. Persistent depression can become a disabling mental health condition.

If you are dealing with symptoms such as low energy levels, decreased interest in your usual passions, or a sense of withdrawal, you may require help for a depressive disorder.

Stress is often associated with sensations of tension and apprehension, serving as a transient experience that may have adaptive qualities despite its discomfort. Nevertheless, when stress reaches harmful levels and starts to disrupt your capacity to function optimally, it demands focused strategies and coping mechanisms.

When something very frightening or threatening happens, a psychological wound can occur.

Traumatic experiences can have a significant impact. Signs and symptoms of issues connected to trauma may be physical, behavioural, emotional, or cognitive.

Obsessive thinking is commonly accompanied by repetitive actions or rituals intended to alleviate the anxiety associated with those thoughts. Seeking support from qualified and experienced professionals is often the most effective approach to tackling this complex issue.

Issues such as insecure attachment, dismissive-avoidant attachment, fearful-avoidant attachment, and anxious-preoccupied attachment typically warrant thorough professional intervention.

Educate yourself on insecure attachment patterns and adopt behaviours that promote secure attachment interactions.
